What personal protective equipment (PPE) is the employer obligated to provide?

Personal protective equipment (PPE) includes specialized clothing, footwear, and other protective gear that help reduce the risk of injuries and occupational diseases in the workplace. If an employee performs work in harmful, hazardous, or special working conditions, the employer is obliged to provide them with the necessary PPE at their own expense.

The list of issued equipment depends on the profession, the nature of the work, and the existing production risks. Before selecting protective gear, an assessment of working conditions and potential hazards at the workplace is conducted. Based on the data obtained, it is determined exactly which PPE employees need to perform their duties safely.

The most common protective equipment includes:

  • Safety helmets;
  • Specialized clothing and footwear;
  • Safety glasses and face shields;
  • Gloves and mittens;
  • Respirators and gas masks;
  • Safety harnesses for work at heights;
  • Hearing protection (earplugs, earmuffs);
  • Dielectric gloves and mats for electrical work.

It is important to understand that providing PPE is not limited to its purchase alone. The employer is obliged to organize proper storage, care, repair, cleaning, and timely replacement of protective equipment as it wears out. The equipment used must comply with established safety requirements and be suitable for performing specific types of work.

Furthermore, employees must be instructed on the correct use of the issued equipment. Even the most modern protective gear will not ensure safety if a worker does not know how to use it correctly or ignores occupational safety requirements.

Special attention is paid to monitoring the use of PPE in the workplace. Department heads and occupational safety specialists are required to ensure that employees use protective equipment throughout the entire work process, and not just during checks or inspections.

The absence of necessary personal protective equipment is considered a violation of occupational safety requirements and can lead not only to administrative fines but also to an increased risk of workplace accidents. Therefore, providing workers with high-quality PPE that matches their working conditions is one of the key duties of the employer and an essential part of the enterprise’s safety system.
